The tradition of town decoration with antiquities has probably arisen from the times when ancient Assyrians brought into the capital of their state two ancient Egyptian obelisks. Their traditions were followed by Romans. In the XIX century ancient monu ments appeared mostly on the main squares of European capitals -Petersburg. Pans. London. In America in front of the New-York Metropolitan Museum of Arts dominates the monumental "Kleopatra Needle"... Sphinxes, who are standing guard over our city secrets, were carved out of syenite in the second part of XV c. B.C.. in the epoch of top power of Egypt. There are ancient letters on the breasts and between the forepaws of Sphinxes that have reached through thousands of years the present day without any changes... |
