Betankur A.A. (1758-1824) -engineer, mechanic, constructor, native of Spain. From 1808 was taken on service in Russia as an inspector of founded under his initiative Institute of overland and sea communication (nowadays the Institute of communications) . With his assistance were built the first Russian steamship. Kamennoostrovsky Bridge ("Betankurov") and pontoon Isaac's Bridge. He took part in development and construction of devices for St. Isaac's Cathedral columns installation. Buried at Smolenskoe Lutheran cemetery (the tomb done by A.A. Montferrand). The monument to Betankur A.A. done by sculptor Gorevoy V.E. and architects Nickitin Y.A. and Popov V.V. is installed at the Fontanka embankment.
