Osirovsky Square.
Catherine II (the Great) (1729-1796) - Russian Empress, the German Princess Sofia Frederica Augusta Ankhalt-Tcerbskaya. During her reign Russia was victorious in Russian - Turkish wars and finally got the territories of Black sea coast. The Empress is also well known for her wide enlightenment activity. The monument was opened in public garden in front of Alexandrinsky Theatre on 24 of November 1873. The authors of the project are: artist Mickeshin M.O.. sculptors Tchizhov M.A. and Opekushin A.M.. architects Grimm D.I. and Schreter VA The bronze Empress figure is installed on high pedestal made of gray polished granite. At the bottom of the pedestal are grouped around nine sculptures of the most outstanding Russian figures of the second part of XVIII century. The inscription at the pedestal reads: "To Empress Catherine II in reign of Emperor Alexander 111. 1873". At the base's bottom are written the names of Empress associates.
