Peter I ("Bronze Horseman")


Decembrists' Square.


This monument to the founder of our city has be come one of the main heroes of the poem "Bronze Horseman" written by A.S. Pushkin. Nowadays the Decembrist's Square is the place to visit of many young people and new-married couples. The monument done by sculptors Falconet E.M., Collot M.A. and Gordeev F.G. was opened on 7 of August 1782. At the granite rock ("Thunder Stone") for pedestal stands reared up horse with redoubtable and imperious horseman, extending his arm over the city bearing his name. Inscription at cloak's fold reads: "Fecet et fudit Stephanas Falcone parisiensis MD CC LXXVIII". at the pedestal made in applied letters at the right side -"Petro Primo Catharina Secunda MDCCLX XXII", at the left side -- "To Peter First Catherina Second year 1782".
