Shi-tzaPetrovsky Embankment


In China such kind of lions is widespread, because in Chinese language the term means "Lion", Such "guards" frighten away evil shades and other evil spirits and are being installed in front of many edifices around the country. The pedestal's inscription reads: Shi-tza from town Girina in Manchuria, brought in St. Petersburg in 1907 and beneath: "The gift of General -of- Infanterya N.X Grodeckov". The General made a donation to the city of one thousand rubles for lions' delivery in Petersburg and asked to install them at the granite berth (descent) of Petrovsky Embankment.
